Students test their designs trying to keep their towns from flooding.
Fourth graders in Ms. Dohman, Ms. Ross, and Ms. Rickelman’s classes used their understanding of erosion and causes of rapid changes to Earth’s surface to build a structure that would reduce the impact of flooding on their neighborhood.
This activity incorporated their science unit on the processes that shaped the earth along with the Engineering and Design Process model. Students collaborated within their groups, built the structure, and tested it.
After testing their designs, they discussed ways to improve their structure and individually reflected on their work.
