This is the time of year for reflection. Starting around Thanksgiving time and through the end of December, I take stock in life in general. I first check in with myself; how am I doing in caring for myself? I’ve learned that I can’t help, support, care for or love anyone else until I help, support, care for and love myself! It took me a long time to realize that peace comes from within and I shouldn’t seek it from without. Working with students every day for the last 29 years, I’ll tell you that this simple rule has allowed me to reach out and help others more than I could ever have imagined. And every time I can put others ahead of myself, I always end up feeling so much better about me!
So at this time of year, I reflect on all of the people that I am thankful for in my life, now and in the past. The list is too long to share, but I will tell you that the privilege I have each day to work alongside young men and women and a creative, caring staff is at the top of that list. Sometimes I have to pinch myself as a reminder of just how lucky I am! It is so true that if you love what you do, you just really can’t call it work!
