Meet Carrie Burken – Fort Madison High School

Carrie Burken is a social studies teacher at Fort Madison High School. She is originally from Cedar Rapids, IA. Ms. Burken attended the University of Northern Iowa to get her bachelor’s in social science secondary education. Carrie Burken’s first teaching job is here at FMHS.

In her free time, Ms. Burken enjoys watching almost any sport, watching old movies, reading, listening to music, playing the guitar, and playing board games with her family. Her favorite book and movie is Pride and Prejudice. Additionally, her favorite t.v. show is New Girl. Also, Ms. Burken’s favorite food is her mom’s homemade bread! Also, Indonesia has been the most interesting place she’s been to. Ms. Burken said, “It was amazing and eye-opening to experience an entirely different culture.”

What Are You Doing Currently In Your Classroom?

“In AP Psychology, we’re learning about how our brain processes and interprets things we perceive. Also, In Intro to Psychology, we’re talking about different theories on personality. In US History, we just finished learning about the mixing of cultures in the USA through immigration,” said Ms. Burken.

Ms. Burken’s goal for her students is for them to leave her classroom having a positive experience and hopefully learning something along the way. Additionally, a fun fact about Carrie Burken is that she is a fraternal twin, she has been given forty different nicknames, and her head is the same size as a 3-5 year old’s. Also, Ms. Burken works as an assistant coach at the high school level for volleyball and soccer.

What is Your Favorite Thing About Your Job/District?

“Working with the other teachers in the social studies department is the best! They always find a way to make me laugh,” said Ms. Burken.
