Mike Wolter is in his first year as superintendent of the Fort Madison Community School District, officially assuming the role in 2025. However, his connection to the district runs deep—he served Fort Madison for 15 years as a middle school math teacher and coach. Returning now as superintendent, Mr. Wolter brings both a strong sense of community and a clear vision for the future of Fort Madison schools.
Prior to his role as superintendent, Mr. Wolter served as the 7–12 principal at Columbus Community School District in Columbus Junction, Iowa. Before that, he spent nine years at Mediapolis Community School District as an assistant principal and activities director, where he gained valuable leadership experience overseeing student programs, athletics, and school operations. Across all roles, he has been committed to creating positive school cultures and building systems that support high levels of student learning.
Mr. Wolter is a passionate advocate for Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and evidence-based teaching practices. He has led collaborative teams focused on improving instruction, raising expectations, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. His leadership philosophy emphasizes accountability, transparency, and support for staff and students alike.
Mr. Wolter earned his Educational Specialist degree with a focus on the superintendency from Northwest Missouri State University in 2025. He holds a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Viterbo University (2008) and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa (1999).
Mr. Wolter has been married for 24 years and is the proud father of two children, both currently attending the University of Iowa. He is honored to lead Fort Madison Community School District and looks forward to working with staff, students, families, and community partners to continue building a district that reflects the values, strengths, and potential of the Fort Madison community.
