Superintendent Dr. Erin Slater

Dr. Erin Slater joined the Fort Madison Community School District in 2016 and is in her 9th year serving the district.  

Prior to joining the FMCSD, Dr. Slater was an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in School District 45 in Villa Park, IL, a western suburb of Chicago.  Dr. Slater oversaw all curriculum purchases, implementation and professional development for all teachers.  Her department housed instructional coaches, technology and bilingual education.

From 1991-2014, Dr. Slater served the West Aurora School District 129 in Aurora, IL in a variety of roles.  The district served over 12,000 students in ten elementary schools, four middle schools and a comprehensive high school of over 3,200 students.  She was an elementary teacher for four years;  an assistant principal for two years; an elementary principal for eleven years, a director of elementary education for two years and the director of K-12 curriculum and instruction for four years.   

During her FMCSD tenure, Dr. Slater has received several awards and recognitions. Dr. Slater was a finalist for Iowa Superintendent of the Year for 2025. She received the Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) TEAM Award in 2018. Dr. Slater has twice been a presenter at the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Annual Conference. Locally, Dr. Slater is a member of the Fort Madison Rotary and Kiwanis Service Organization.

Dr. Slater obtained her Doctorate of Education degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL  in 2018. She received her Educational Specialist degree in 2010 and her Master in Science in Education degree in 1995 also from Northern Illinois University.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1990 from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Slater is originally from Algona, Iowa, and has been married for 31 years to her husband and together they have raised three children.
